One of the most common forms of comment and pingback spam right now is the relatively subtle, ambiguous kind — short phrases or questions that are not obviously spam, at least on face value. Since we last posted about this, the more sophisticated spammers have progressed from old standbys like “nice post” and “great blog”, to more cunning things like questions (”where can I download your theme?”) and appeals to your helpful nature (”I’m having trouble subscribing to your RSS feed”).

Akismet almost always catches these kinds of bogus comments.

The tip-off of course is that they often include a link to a site that’s advertising dubious or sleazy merchandise (or worse, a web site that harms the viewer’s computer). But it’s easy to forget to look at the link before approving a comment, or give the comment author the benefit of the doubt without checking closely. And spammers have recently learned to post several comments over time, the first of which contains no link or obvious clue. (We call these precursor spams).

Anyway, a comment is a comment, right, so what’s the harm in approving a few tame platitudes, even if they were posted by spammers?

Unfortunately it is harmful, and most of the damage is to your own site.

By moving these comments out of your spam folder and publishing them on your blog, you’re doing three things, all of them bad:

1. You are undermining your site’s SEO.

The spammer’s web site might seem inoffensive on face value. But the black-hat SEO and spam methods used by its promoter are not. That same spammer is busy building backlinks from anywhere they can find them, including some of the web’s worst neighbourhoods. By regularly publishing links to spammers’ web sites, you’re giving Google and other search engines a hint that links from your blog are poor quality.

Now it’s true that Google will try not to penalize a web site for inadvertently linking to a bad neighbourhood. But even if they don’t, you are weakening the value of each of the other links from your blog - “diluting your GoogleJuice”, if you like - and helping to validate the spammer’s web site. In some cases you might even find that you are helping the spammer overtake your blog in search engine results.

2. You are attracting more spammers.

Less skilled spammers will deliberately seek out blogs that other spammers have successfully spammed, because they know they are easy targets. Organized spammers circulate lists of such blogs (for a small fee of course). And professionals keep their own lists of previous victims, because they know future spam is even more likely to be approved there. By letting some spam through - even seemingly harmless ones - you are providing a signal to spammers that your blog is a profitable target. (Experienced bloggers will be familiar with this phenomenon: you accidentally approve one seemingly unremarkable spam comment, and a big batch of ugly spam follows soon after).

WordPress and many other blog applications have a feature, independent of Akismet, where regular users who have had at least one comment approved, will automatically skip the moderation queue next time and have their comments published right away. Spammers know this, and they’ll come back to take advantage of it. Often they’ll link to a harmless looking site in their first comment (or include no link at all), but link to progressively more blatant spam in subsequent comments.

3. You are damaging your reputation.

You might not click on the links in all the comments on your blog, but some of your readers will. And some of those links will go to sites that are sleazy, offensive, or harmful.

Worse still, a spam tactic that is becoming more popular is to first post a small number of spam comments on innocent blogs; then send a large volume of spam to other web sites linking to the blog post that contains those comments. (They do this to try to get around spam filters and blacklist that recognize and catch links to their own site).

If you do publish spam comments on your blog, you might discover later that thousands of other blogs and forums have been spammed with links to your blog.

So what should you do about it?

Akismet will almost always catch these comments and put them in your Spam folder. Usually you don’t need to do anything; just don’t approve them for publication.

We have a real-time view of spam activity on millions of blogs around the world, so we can detect patterns in behaviour that can’t be seen by looking at any one single comment. If a bland, generic comment turns up in your spam folder, you should be suspicious of it - Akismet flagged it for a reason. Think twice before approving it for publication. Unless you know the author, it almost certainly is spam — or a subtle precursor to it.

Also, keep an eye out for forthcoming Akismet updates. In addition to our usual work behind the scenes monitoring and adapting to new spam techniques, we’re developing some new features designed specifically to help protect against the potential harm done by spammers.

Google’s rule: the more backlinks mean more votes, the more votes mean more popularity, more popularity mean rank well in Search Engine Result Page, rank well means more visitors, the more visitors mean more money for us. It’s a bit complicated chain, but with a lucrative consequence. All SEO minded bloggers will agree with me on this concern.

Plan Before You Build

If your main motivation isn’t to solve a specific need for a plugin, than there are many other ways to generate ideas and reasons to write a Wordpress plugin. Sure, you could always whip up the simple “hello world” plugin (provided in the default Wordpress installation), but we want something a little more challenging, right? If your plugin idea seems simple enough to create from scratch, try using your plugin idea as your sample application instead of spending time building a useless application that you’ll never use, just for practice.

If you’d like some more ideas for building a plugin, DevLounge has created a list of ways to generate ideas for writing Wordpress plugins. Generally, the best practice is to start researching other existing plugins and work on ideas to improve them.

Gather Powerful Tools

You can’t start building your plugin without setting up a proper test environment. Here are some must-have tools for building a Wordpress plugin:

  • Firefox - If you’ve yet to install Firefox on your computer run, don’t walk, over to Mozilla and snag a download of the superior web browser. It’s an incredibly useful tool for web developers.
  • Firefox Extensions - There are two really good Firefox extensions that make debugging and designing your plugin much less of a chore: Firebug and the Web Developer extension.
  • Wordpress - You’ll need a clean install of Wordpress so that you can set up your testing environment on your computer.

Gather Good Information

Aside from this post, you’ll need some other documents that allow you to quickly find Wordpress plugin API references. Here are a few that will come in handy:

  • Wordpress’ Plugin Resources - Reference guide for all things Wordpress plugins. Tutorials and how-tos galore.
  • Wordpress Plugin API - This is your lifeline, your cheat sheet of everything that comprises a Wordpress plugin. If you’re ever stuck, this is the document you’ll go back and reference for help.
  • Plugin API Action Reference - The list of actions that are available in Wordpress plugins.
  • Plugin API Filter Reference - The list of filter hooks that are available in Wordpress plugins.
  • Wordpress IRC Channel - Fire up your favorite IRC client to access this pool of Wordpress developers who are willing to help with your plugin creation woes.

Create a Dedicated Test Environment

Now that you’ve gathered your tools and resources needed to create a plugin, it’s time to set up your test environment. There are two different methods of setting up a plugin test environment. The best way to speed up your development time is to create a testbed on your own computer, using Apache and MySQL. While this can be a bit more advanced, there are tutorials for setting up different Wordpress environments with both of these technologies.

For developing on a Windows machine, try installing Wordpress using XAMPP, a nifty program that bundles Apache and MySQL together in an easy install. (Note: XAMPP is cross-platform, so Linux and Mac users can use it too.)

Another option for Mac users is to install Wordpress using MAMP, a program that bundles MySQL and Apache for use on Macs.

The second option for test environments is to just make a separate directory on your webserver and create a fresh install of Wordpress on that. You’ll have to upload every change using FTP, so it will be much slower than a local test environment.

Master the Basics

Fortunately for unskilled programmers like myself, building a Wordpress plugin can be a relatively simple process. Sure, you can make incredibly advanced plugins, but it’s quite easy to just dive into creating a simple plugin with the framework that Wordpress has set up.

Jarkko wrote an article on earlier this year on the anatomy of a Wordpress plugin, and this is an excellent place to start with the basics of plugin writing. The tutorial shows how to create a simple plugin that creates a widget that shows upcoming scheduled posts on a Wordpress site. A perfect resource for any beginner, complete with source files.

Access and Manipulate Database Data

Database interaction is crucial to nearly all plugins, so it’s important to understand the basics of how to connect to the Wordpress database and access data. The Wordpress documents have an excellent tutorial on how to interact with databases.

Utilize Javascript and CSS

While some plugins might not need any extra styling, adding a little spice to your plugin never hurt. DevLounge has a great article on how to include elements like Javascript and CSS into your plugin.

Ajax is another element that can really make a difference in a Wordpress plugin. Sending data without needing a page refresh is a useful attribute to have in your plugin. Here are some resources on how to utilize Ajax in a Wordpress plugin:

Add a Versatile Options Page

Your plugin might require an Options menu and page to show configurable choices for the Wordpress administration section. The Wordpress Codex has a great reference page on adding administration menus. If you’re wanting a tutorial with screenshots, then try Wordpress Bits’ Adding Options to Wordpress tutorial.

Internationalize It!

A useful way to spread the reach of your plugin is to translate it into different languages. The Wordpress plugin framework allows developers to localize the plugin, allowing for different translations to be made.

Spread it to the Masses

Here a few of the main resources to publicize your kickin’ plugin and allow other Wordpress users to download it:

  • Wordpress.org’s Plugin Directory - The official Wordpress site is far and away the best place to promote your plugin. It has an extensive plugin directory that many Wordpress users find plugins with. Just register an account and upload your plugin. The plugin will have to be approved by Wordpress.org to make sure that it follows their plugin guidelines.
  • Weblog Tools Collection - You can submit your plugin to Weblog Tools Collection, a widely-read blog on blog tools and plugins.
  • Wordpress Forums - You can use the Wordpress forums to find beta testers for your plugin, to make sure the plugin is free of bugs and ready for “prime time”.
  • Plugin Submission and Promotion - The Wordpres Codex has a great resource on how to get your plugin in front of testers and other Wordpress users

In forums or groups with a wordpress topic, there are quite often questions about how to offer downloads that require a charge. One of several Wordpress shop plugins could shurely offer this, .. but really more hypothetically. If you want to offer loose download links against payment (to the eBooks for example) or certain information (with serial numbers for products for example), those shop plugins are most of the time far much too complex and expensive and therefore really overdone and in most cases also not flexible enough. The newly developed WordPress plugin wpSALE is very quickly installed and offers parts of a post or downloads only after successful payment with PayPal.

German Version
wpSALE: Mehr verkaufen unter WordPress. Unkompliziert und effizient

Jump marks

Mode of operation
So what does wpSALE? This software, which comprehends by the way only a few kByte, notices the marked parts of the blog operator and replaces them with an alternative, promotional text, regardless if these parts are download-links, text parts or even something different. wpSALE alters the via short code marked part (similiar to wpSLEEP) to a chargable and only after payment reachable content area.

The short code (= marked part) can therefore be placed everywhere and also multiple times within a blog text. When marking the parts, the corresponding attriubutes are also defined: That is why the data has not to be entered in a complicated way and with effort in the WordPress backend - everything is already done locally within the shortcode.

Price und the promotinal text that wpSALE adds with a link for payment, are those attributes. With the help of more attributes/parameters, which are placed before or after the payment link, even more information can be added, which offers you more freedom and playground for the arrangement of the “sold note”. An Example with possible parameters for the time being:

Examples

  • [wpsale cost="0,99" id="display-serial" before="Paid content!" link="Now paying via PayPal!" after="Please pay $ %cost% for viewing the content"]Your Serial: 123456789[/wpsale]
  • [wpsale cost="3.99" id="download-product" before="Pay $ %cost% to download this product!" link="Now paying via PayPal!"]Thanks for buying with Paypal! <a href=”product.zip”>Click here for download the file.</a>[/wpsale]

Marking, forwarding, paid
After marking the area and saving the post, the reader can only see the alternative text and the link (before, link, after). But all of this happens intuitively: If the user decides to pay and clicks on the payment-link, wpSALE automatically forwards him to the PayPal site, where he loggs in and makes the payment. After successful transaction, PayLal forwards the user back to his previous website. The alternative text is now gone and the user can see or download the content, he paid for.

The successfull transaction at PayPal has supplied the browser with a valid cookie, that passes the verification. The advantage of this technic is obvious: The reader does not have the effort to have to register and wait for the admin review to be able to see the content that requires a charge. The course of process is just one step and thanks to PayPal quick, safe and unbureaucratic.

The possible shady side of this solution
The disadvantage is surely that the cockie can be deleted and in cause of that, the user can not access the content he paid for. This can happen by manual deletion or by the validity period of the used browser. On the other hand there is the question, if the offered content that required a charge, should be accessable for eternity, after one has paid for it. I am quite sure: No it should not. My thoughts, speculations and view about that:

  • The link that forwards one to the download of the eBook, once the user has paid for it, leads to the direct downlaod: The pdf can be saved locally on his pc.
  • The serial number, that is shown after successfull payment, is copied once to activate a certain program. After that, not again.

Possible attributes in [wpsale]… [/wpsale]

  • cost
Product price in german oder english format.
  • id
Explicit ID respectively the name of the product. Ideally - as IDs do - this identification number consists only out of numbers, but this is not mandatory. PayPal shows the ID within the payment details.
  • before
    Text before the payment link.
  • link
Associated text to the payment link.
  • after
    Text after the payment link.

Possilbe placeholder in [wpsale]… [/wpsale]

  • %cost%
At the time being the only placeholder can be placed within the attributes before, link and/or after and will be replaced with the value from the attribute cost automatically. The advantage: The price of the product has to be set in the short code only once.

How do you make a link directory? You can pay for the scripts or you can use a free plugin designed for Wordpress.

But why would you want to create a web directory? Isn’t it just going to create reciprocal links, which are pretty much worthless? Well, directories are only good for the directory owner, and not the sites listed in the directory.

To create a web directory in Wordpress, you need to download the plugin. From there, all you need to do is drop it in your Wordpress plugins file, and enable it.

How To Use A Link Directory Effectively

Say you are putting together a health-food related directory. You should solicit webmasters to submit their health-food sites to your directory, and ask them for a reciprocal link.

But you don’t give them the link for your directory. You give them the link for your other site, the one you want to promote. So now you have all of these sites linking back to your main site, and the web directory is filled with a bunch of sites. The sites in the directory don’t do you much good, but over time it can make the directory more useful, and if you put work into it, you can make a useful web directory of health-food related websites.

So now you have a useful web directory, and are getting tons of 1-way links to your main site.

So the next time you see a link directory, realize the guy running it may be a lot smarter thank you think.

The Business Directory plugin for Wordpress is an easy way to host a free directory page for your readers, affiliates, advertisers, community or club members. Invite them to submit a simple advertisement listing for themselves on your blog.

Listings include company name, a short description, and contact information including a live URL. The plugin includes an admin tab that allows you to approve of listings before they appear live on the site. You can also edit and delete listings.

We will soon have a premium version of this plugin that allows you to promote a listing upgrade to your directory participants; you set the cost and collect via PayPal, they get to upload a logo and appear in the top ‘premium’ section of your Directory.

Business Directory is a great way to increase the SEO value of your site, and to monetize your community participation.

  • Make Your Goal and Target Audience Crystal Clear
My point with this entire post, but most especially this section is to ask you to admit what your real goals are with your blog. If you’re not sure, that’s fine. You might not really want to take your blog to the next level just yet. But if you’re feeling as if you want to get serious (in whatever direction that takes your efforts), give strong consideration to the following.
  • If your goal is to be an entertainment or news blog, be very clear that it’s that and not a “fun” blog. Consider splitting off your personal or fun blog.
  • If your blog is to be your business, treat it like that. Get into stats. Get into building audience. Get into delivering something unique. Don’t straddle back and forth on this.
  • If the goal is to be a great community resource, mix your blogging time with time spent reaching out to the community you propose to serve. If that’s an offline opportunity, like something local, be there. Be active. Be a connector.
  • If you’re going to be a professional about your blog, carve out the time to do it right. Never, ever, ever post a “sorry I haven’t posted lately” blog post again. Ever.
  • Up the ante on delivering original material. Get outside the echo chamber. Writing a me-too blog isn’t the way to build your blog to the levels you seek to attain.
  • It’s okay to use a personal voice. In fact, there’s no point blogging if you’re going to write like a cold robot. But keep personal and useful in balance.
  • If you are attempting to do real business via your blog, look for ways to convert readers into customers.
If it’s just an ad revenue business, compete, and be honest about that. Compete with others in your space for audience, value, and better deals. My point in this regard is that going halfway into the water doesn’t make you less wet.
  • If your blog is the premier source of information for nonprofits, for photographers, for whatever, then be sure you’re scouring news feeds and finding information outside the blogosphere to keep that relationship informed.
Make a point of engaging your community often in the comments section, on their blogs, on the other social networks where you cross paths.

Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep

  • Consider the design elements of your blog. They do change the way people perceive your work. And, they can help you improve your potential business opportunities.
  • Get your own unique URL. It matters in the long run, especially should you choose to change hosts. For instance, if you move off a blogger account at *.blogspot.com , you lose all link equity and page rank for that domain. This means you’d have to start again from scratch. Already in that position? Make the switch now.
  • Consider moving to a hosted blog. You can get a hosted WordPress blog set up and running for only $10 USD a year at Bloghost.me. (Note: if you use code “brogan,” you can get it for $9 a year. Andy’s a friend.)
Consider using a professional theme. I am an advocate for Thesis by Chris Pearson. There are other premium themes out there, as well.
  • Consider getting a customized Wordpress theme. That link goes to Nico Pin, who designed [chrisbrogan.com]. There are others who do this kind of work, obviously.
  • Are there several unnecessary widgets on your blog? Review them and decide which add value to your audience.
Is your layout readable? Are your fonts clean and easy to read? Are your color choices all they can be? A little time with your stylesheet goes a long way.
  • If you have ads, are you choking your community with them? Do you actually endorse the products on them? How effective have they been?
  • Is your blog design and layout configured well for SEO? Several blogging platforms now have SEO plug-ins/add-ons to help with this. That doesn’t beat having a professional take a swing at improving your blog’s SEO, but it’s a good first step.
  • A logo and matching favicon doesn’t hurt. You can find various price points for this, and many different people offering the service. Mine was created by Justin Evans and his team at StressLimit Design. I also have friends in California that I highly recommend, as well.
  • Consider the graphics you post on your site. Do they add to the story you’re trying to tell? If not, seek upgrades. There are many freely available graphics at Flickr, if you search by the appropriate Creative Commons license level.

Make Your Content Top Notch

Growing quality blog posts isn’t magic. We don’t sprinkle cookies all over the house and hope that the Blogging Fairy comes along and writes us posts in exchange for the cookies. It takes lots of work, and a strong commitment. And if it doesn’t come naturally, you CAN learn how to improve.

  • Put your blog posts on a diet. Read them with your audience in mind. Can you thin them out? Remove unnecessary words. Make them tight.
  • Lead with the main point. If you’re attempting to be a quality news or opinion blog, make your main point at the top of the post. Don’t make us dig.
  • Link. If you’re writing about another person, post, or website, link appropriately and thread the web. It fleshes out the story, gives us places to explore, and shows a “good neighbor” practice.
  • Vary up post lengths. If you write a “feature length” post, have something brief come next to avoid reader fatigue. (Unless you’re writing an essay-length blog all the time, and hey, good luck.)
  • Read. Read. Read. Get outside the blogosphere. Find sources of information that span far beyond what your competitors are covering.
  • Get on a regular writing/posting schedule. Extra points for writing a few posts ahead of time for those days when you can’t get to it right away.
  • Work on your titles. A great title drives visits, but also informs us as to what we’re going to learn.
  • Refrain from “me too” posts. If you’ve got something to add, do that and link to the original post, but if you’re moving up to the next level, lose the “pointer” posts. (Your mileage may vary on this one).
  • Consider video, audio, and rich media. If you’re doing a text-mostly blog, consider mixing it up from time to time. It might find you new audience, and it might also give people a more dimensional sense of who you are.
  • Review your blog posts monthly to see if you’re covering the same ground. If you are, consider building an editorial calendar to post from, so that you don’t overlap and repeat topics too often.

Promoting Your Blog

No one loves someone who talks about themselves all the time, but if you’re going to work on bringing your blog up a few notches, make sure your efforts aren’t for nothing.

  • Use a social bookmarking plugin like AddThis or Share This on your blog posts so that people who like your work can share it easily.
  • Make a very prominent option to subscribe by email available on your site. More than 50% of my readers do so via email.
  • Add your blog URL to your email signature.
  • Make sure your blog URL is on your twitter profile, your facebook profile, added into Friendfeed, and several other outposts. This helps people discover you who might not have noticed your work before. (Note: Steve Rubel said that to me many months back. He told me that he “discovered” my blog via Facebook. I’ve been a believer ever since.)
  • If you’re going to promote your blog via places like Twitter, be sure to do it tastefully instead of just dumping links into the stream. Consider asking a question, or pointing out a rather insightful comment.
  • Make sure you’re doing the basics, like listing your site in Yahoo!, Google, DMOZ, and claiming it in Technorati.com (each of those sites shows you how via the help function).
  • Commenting on other well-known blogs in your same space in a not-spammy way is a great way for people who might like your work to discover you. Don’t put blatant links or otherwise be rude. Just be thoughtful and helpful to the community at that site, and leave a useful comment. They’ll come, if they like what you said.
  • Don’t forget posting the occasional blog post in LinkedIn’s status message. It reaches some interesting people from time to time.
  • Is it fair to Digg or Stumble your own posts? There are mixed opinions on this. I’ve had little to no success with Digg in this regard. StumbleUpon is a different story. Decide for yourself if you think this is okay to do. I’ve heard it called “patting yourself on the back in public.”
  • Write the occasional post that’s worthy of bookmarking. When someone adds a blog post of mine to Delicious, I often get lots more traffic than from other promotional angles.

Building Business From Your Blog

You might be trying to make money from your blog directly, perhaps through advertising or affiliate marketing. Or you might be seeking to establish thought leadership and promote consulting opportunities. You might be simply looking to drive even better awareness of a social cause or have a nonprofit or educational motive in mind. In any case, think of “business” to mean “value beyond the blogging itself.”

  • Build conversion opportunities. If you’re selling something directly, think of clever ways to post about it that educate, inform, and encourage a call to action.
  • Make sure your blog design points people towards the action you want them to take. (See Financial Aid Podcast for an easy example).
  • Ask for the sale. If you’re selling something, don’t be shy. Ask for it. Do so in a blog post, or in an ad of your own creation. Be direct and honest about this.
  • Mix free value and additional opportunities. If you’re selling something that’s not unlike what’s available on your blog for free, demonstrate the dividing line. Even consider giving a hint of what’s on the other side.
  • Make it easy to opt in. Like asking for the sale, make sure you help your prospective customers/cleints/partners know how to get into your sales funnel, should they be interested.
  • Make content that sells. If you’re blogging or posting video to promote a business objective, work at building the content such that it drives that end decision. Too 1.0 for you? At least open conversations up about what you’re trying to accomplish.
  • Make it very easy to contact you. Make your About page very clean and easy to read. Put some real human names on the website, and even consider adding a photo, so that people know who they’re addressing. (I say this all the time, but I see so many examples daily of people who could use this advice.)
  • Build relationships with similar blogs and share opportunities. If you’re blogging about real estate, get to know the other real estate bloggers and learn from each other.
  • Give “serving suggestions” on your blog. If you’re blogging a particular kind of offering, is there a way to share what it does, or how you want to be involved?
  • Remember: even if your blog’s main goal is selling, be human, be interesting, be involved. This isn’t the old Internet. We have these nifty social tools that remind us to be human. Let’s use them that way. My goal in writing this was to offer advice and suggestions for how one might transform their blog from “another one in the pack” to something of a destination on the web. It’s not my opinion that we should all be following this advice. There are several blogs that I love exactly the way they are, and I’m sure their respective owners do, too.

I am truly blessed. This book—all of my books, my business, and my success so far—would not have been possible without so many people who have contributed and made a difference to me in so many ways.
Many thanks to my right hand, Stephanie Strathdee, for all the help with this edition of 101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site. This book was definitely a team effort.
