Wordpress out of the box permits basic management of the primary SEO meta information. To extend the functionality we add our own super-charged version of the All-In-One-SEO Pack. The SEO pack makes it easy to alter the page title and page meta description.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack is a great WordPress plugin that completes the SEO aspects for WordPress. For some unknown reason WordPress still has not got the SEO fixed out of the box.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack provides for you to change the most important page elements – page title and page description. It also permits you to change the page keywords, but as we all know, search engines no longer take note of these because they have been spammed too much in the past. Google stopped using the keywords for page ranking in the early 2000\’s.

Page Title tags

This is the No1 SEO component to manipulate. Always make sure that you control the page title. The page title appears in the browser window at the very top of the screen. Search engines use this in the listings and show it in their search results.

Always try to make the page title only contain the keywords you want the page to rank for. Try to restrict them to two or 3 maximum.

Just like with a book the page title of an HTML page is the most significant element. Never leave this element to chance. Make sure you use keywords in the title.

If your page needs to stretch to cover two or three keywords we have found that you can still get solid rankings from adding multiple keywords to the title. But do remember that the closer the page title is to the keyword you want to rank for the better.

If you are a larger branded company you will likely want to add your company or brand name into the page title considering this is displayed on Google. Keep it short and simple though. Do not add your brand statement just your brand or company name.

Page Description Meta Tags

This element is NOT used by search engines for ranking purposes. However, most search engines will employ this in their search results so it is important. Google does not use the description all the time but we find that it uses it about 80-90% of the time. The rest of the time it will pick up the first piece of text on the page.

By having a good description it will increase your click through rates because the text will be more appealing to people. Ensure that you use a maximum of 156 characters. If you use any more characters Google will cut short the rest. If you can keep your descriptions to–0 characters or less this is even better seeing Google sometimes adds a date to the start of the description which is part of the 156 characters it displays.

SEO Meta data shown on Google listing

Changing the meta data and page title

At the bottom of every page and post you will find the meta tags plugin details. Update the details appropriately. Note: If you can only use see the title for the plugin and no details, just click the title and the section will expand.

WordPress in itself is a decent system but you can turn it on to a rocking beast. Adding plugins can make WordPress into the Swiss Army Knife of blogging: just pull out whatever functionality you need for your specific blog!

So I gather here the top popular plugins that every blogger should have, and a list of personal choices, and as a bonus a list of MUST have plugins for making money online blogging.

MUST have by default plugins
Askimet
This wordpress plugin is installed by default, you only need to activate it and follwo the instructions provided here on how to use it.

FeedBurner FeedSmith

Using some WordPress plugin magic, and user-agent detection, this plugin simply forwards all your feed traffic to FeedBurner. The plugin will detect all ways to access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2.php, etc.), and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. It will forward for your main posts feed, and optionally your main comments feed as well.

If you use several sources for feeds you should use this one.

Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress

This plugin generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. This format is supported by Ask.com, Google, YAHOO and MSN Search.

This is a plugin that will help you to get indexed fast on google, use it.

CForms

cforms is a feature rich plugin for Wordpress, offering convenient deployment of multiple Ajax driven contact forms throughout your blog or even on the same page.

If you intend to have a sales page or feedback page or contact page, whatever uses forms I recommend you to use this plugin.

All in One SEO Pack

This plugin is streamlined for some best practices for Wordpress SEO. While it gives you many options the defaults reflect the settings I recommend using.

A must HAve plugin for your SEO wordpress, use it and you can getgreat results from it for SEO.

Admin Drop Down Menu

One of the first things I wanted to improve in the admin area of my WordPress blog, back in the 1.5 days, was the header menu. I wanted to be able to reach any admin page in one click, instead of first clicking on the first level link (”Manage” for example) and then only on a submenu link (”Comments“) So came a very neat plugin : the Worpdress Admin Drop Down Menu.

If you are like me, who uses dozens of plugins, there will be a time you need a better organization on your menu. This plugin will help for sure.

Wp-Autotagger

This plugin uses the Yahoo API to suggest tags based on the post content. The plugin will add a `Suggest Tags` button to the `Write Post` page sidebar.

A very usefull plugin that will pick up the tags from your post for you. If you dont pick up the keywords (using All in One SEO Pack) this plugin will insert the tags picked up, and use them as your keywords in your psot/page for SEO.

Site Map Generation

This plugin creates a sitemap for your WordPress powered site. This is not just another XML sitemap plugin, but rather a true sitemap generator which is highly customizable from its own options page in the WordPress admin panel. Some of its features include: support for multi-level categories and pages, category/page exclusion, multiple-page generation with navigation, permalink support, choose what to display, what order to list items in, show comment counts and/or post dates, and much more.

Stats Press

The first real-time plugin dedicated to the management of statistics about blog visits. It collects information about visitors, spiders, search keywords, feeds, browsers etc.

Very detailed traffic statistics.

WordPress Super Cache

WP Super Cache is a static caching plugin for WordPress. It generates html files that are served directly by Apache without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts. By using this plugin you will speed up your WordPress blog significantly.

I havent used this one, I have it installed but not configured it yet.

WP-DBManager

Manages your Wordpress database. Allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up and optimizing of database.

MUST have for traffic plugins

This list if for plugins that will help you on the long run to drive more traffic (visitors) to your site.

Signature Manager

This simple little plugin gives each author on your blog the ability to setup a signature and to include it at the bottom of their posts.

This is a great tool. I advise you when usign this plugin to make sure your feeds will display the whole text and not just part of it. Why? Because when displaying the full text it will ALSO display your signature which turns into a natural backlink to yrou site (good for SEO and raking keywords)

RSS Footer

This very simple plugin let’s you add an extra line of content to articles in your feed, defaulting to “Post from: ” and then a link back to your blog, with your blog’s name as it’s anchor text.

If you are like me who doestn like at all to show the intire content on you feed, than use this plugin. Just look at my feed “http://www.onlinemoneytricks.net/feed” and check the link under each post

Tweetmeme

The tweetmeme button plugin allows you to easily integrate the tweetmeme button into your wordpress blog. The plugin will put the button into both your content and you feed.

This is the plugin I use on my posts, the green badge on the top of the post. Very usefull

Twitter Tolls

This plugin that creates an integration between your WordPress blog and your Twitter account. It allows you to pull your tweets into your blog (as posts and digests) and create new tweets on blog posts and from within WordPress.

This is a MUST have plugin for sure. Every time you get a new post on yoru blog it automaticly post it on your twitter account as well. Good to drive visitors to your blog. Just like I do :)

Sociable

Automatically add links to your favorite social bookmarking sites on your posts, pages and in your RSS feed. You can choose from 99 different social bookmarking sites!

I personally dont use this plugin, due to design issues, but this is a must have plugin, if you have thousands of visitors you will want them to bookmark your post on the top social bookmarks sites.

WP-EMail

Allows people to recommand/send your WordPress blog’s post/page to a friend.

I tried to use this one, but didnt had the time to configure it, so I dont really know how good it is, but for what I have seen it is good.

Atomic Blogging

This plugin was geniously built in a way that it wont get hurt by google.
It uses a system built by Alvin himself, a very sofisticated way to automaticaly submit your posts into the most popolated social bookmark sites. This way you at least get 3 link backs to your blog with a single post.

I use this plugin on every blog I built. Using on this one itself. This is mandatory if you want to drive more traffic into your blog. This is kinda like the twitter tools, but it bookmarks your posts directly to 5 random sociable bookmark sites.

HELP Money Makers Plugin

Heres the good part, and what the pros dont tell you. ATTENTION most of this plugins are paid, but ei if you dont have money to invest a bit, why are you reading my blog?

OIO Publisher

OIOpublisher is an ad manager with a focus on performance, control and ease of use. Serve advertising on your blog or website and keep 100% of the revenue you bring in.

Get this trough the link and get $8 off using this Coupon “SPRING-MMPLUGIN” without the ” ”

For now thats it. Hope you enjoy it.

Though there are dozens of top lists of WordPressWordPress reviewsWordPress reviews themes available online, we never seem to get enough. So after scrolling through hundreds of themes across the Web, we decided to come up with another of our lists of top themes that are a class apart in terms of uniqueness in design and visual appeal.

This is a collection of our top 12 in no particular order. Check them out. While most are free, there are few that are not, though they are too good to miss. Tell us about your favorite WordPress themes in the comments.

Infinity

Infinity makes you think you are looking at ultimate creativity in WordPress theme design. This three column theme has been put together beautifully with thumbnails, header and footer graphics, and a picture scroll. The color play is impressive. A great theme for designers and photo bloggers.

Red Passion

Red Passion has exquisite red floral graphics in the header area and one more in the background, and the combination of the two makes this theme a treat for sore eyes. The search box is located just below the blog title and description. There is also an RSS icon in the header area next to the search box.

F8

F8 is a magazine-like theme for photo bloggers who wish to also have their pictures do the talking. The clean white background gels with the black lines and the picture grid that run across the homepage. The theme can double as a portfolio site for designers and multimedia professionals. Note: F8 is not a free theme.

WP Coda

WP Coda is one of the most professional-looking themes in this collection. The color combination is fantastic. One thing that differentiates the theme from the rest is the sliding posts. The author says he had made this theme by modifying lots of existing code and using them with his design. The theme mimics the functionality of the popular coda website. Worth a look.

TV.Elements

TV. Elements is a neat Wordpress theme for video bloggers. There is a main video display and series of video scrolls on the right hand side. On the left side, there are ShareThis, subscribe, and comment links. Below the video window, you can add your post. The dark background gives it a necessary mystic look. Like F8, TV.ELements is not a free theme.

Wood World

Wood World is a neatly designed theme. I like how every post has been separated from each other. Each and every part of the theme, including a scrapedRSS icon and a search box with a wooden-look background, has been given detailed attention.

Notepad Chaos

Notepad Chaos is a vibrant, colorful, and floral theme with one of the most intricate designs. The sidebar elements have been done up with different post-it note designs, while the main posts are nestled in a white notepad design. The theme also has a handwritten search box, navigational links in the header, and sidebar headlines.

Agregado

Agregado is a another radical take on how a WordPress theme can be constructed. This theme suits your normal blogging requirements, as well as your lifestreaming requirements, served in a sidebar capsule. It has the snippet of the latest post shown on the home page, along with just the headlines of the older posts. The subcategories, pages, archives, search, etc. are tucked away so that the reader focuses on the latest content.

Intrablog

Intrablog is a theme with a very clean and fresh look. This is a result of the white and silver colors in the post and sidebar areas. It’s another unique take on WordPress theme design and suitable for personal blogs.

Hot Orange

Hot Orange has a red header with a neat floral design, a post area with a black background, and a silver color area that bridges the header and post area. Another good color combination and unique design.

Rainbow Feather

Rainbow Feather has shades of sky blue, yellow, blue, and pink colors joined together in horizontal blocks to form the header navigation area, main header, post area, and footer. This is one of the most striking themes that we have come across.

Motion

Motion is for those who are daring and can opt for a one column theme. There are three blocks of content that expand on a single click and contract when another is opened. There is a link to the older entries below these content blocks. The color combination of orange, silver, and black is attractive.

This is search engine optimization tip number twenty five in our continuing series of Search Engine Optimization tips. All of our SEO tips are meant to be pretty specific in nature, should not take too long to read and review, and will be rather “short and sweet” and directly to the point. This search engine optimization tip has to do with something that you might have forgotten to do: update your copyright date.

Not following along with our Search Engine Optimization Tips? You might want to take a look at the recap of search engine optimization tips I posted. There are a lot more search engine optimization tips coming in the future. In fact, to keep up with these SEO tips you might want to subscribe to our SEO RSS Feed.

This search engine optimization tip is probably something that you probably forgot about, which we actually need to do at the beginning of each year: update the copyright data on all of the web pages on your web site. This actually does have to do with search engine optimization, and I will explain that in a minute.

Technically speaking, the date of the copyright indicates the year the content was created or published. For articles or blog posts on your web site, I typically recommend that the date when it was published is actually added towards the top of the article or blog post (depending on your blog’s template, it might be included near the title of the blog post, under it, or in a sidebar somewhere. It might actually be located in the URL, as well, especially if it is a blog post. But, the actual copyright date should appear somewhere it your web site’s footer.

For example, if you look at the footer of our site, you’ll see something like this:

vizion-copyright-2009.jpg

As you can see, we have updated our date to 2009. Take a look at your web site. Look to see if you have updated your copyright date. If you have not updated it yet (maybe it’s even a few years old?), then I suggest that you update it. Why? Well, here is where the search engine optimization part comes in: it forces you to review your site’s web pages and, if you update the web page manually, then you will have updated every page on your web site: the search engines will notice this change and they may re-crawl your web site as a result. There’s a “last modified date” on each of the web pages on your site: and if it’s updated then it might cause the search engines to respider that web page, especially if they haven’t in a while.

The copyright notice, and how it’s displayed on your web site, really can vary; the style that you use is really up to you. In fact, if you take a look at here, you will see several different various of the copyright notice:

copyright © 2008 Microsoft Corporation. Release: Thursday, February 7, 2008.

copyright © 2006 by Microsoft Press Deutschland

copyright 2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

© copyright 2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

There are so many different variations that it’s really up to your particular writing style and the style of your web site: and, most importantly, if you have the room in your footer for a long copyright notice or you need a shorter one.

For search engine optimization purposes, though, you might consider changing the length of your copyright notice and adding or changing the link you may (or may not have) in your copyright. Add a longer or a shorter copyright notice in the footer depending on what you currently are using: if you had a short copyright notice, then add a longer one. This will change the file size of your web pages, which may cause the search engines to see the updated file(s) on your web site. Some of the search engines prefer “fresh” content, and you may be rewarded for the change.

Also, for search engine optimization purposes, you might update the footer of your web pages to include a link to your site’s home page along with your copyright. If you mention your company name in the copyright notice, consider adding linking that either to your web site’s home page or even an “about us” or “about our company” web page on your web site. This additional link may help your search engine rankings.

So, updating the copyright notice on all of the web pages on your web site not only helps your web site look like it’s been updated, updating your copyright notice might the file size of your web page. It might also cause you to take a look at your web pages to see if the copyright has been updated on all pages on your web site. And, looking at your web pages, manually, to review them like this, might reveal some other areas or issues that you have on your site that needs attention.

This guest post was written by Jean-Baptiste Jung, who maintains a blog over at Cats Who Code that covers WordPress and other webmaster stuff. If you have webmaster or WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for WordPress Hacks, please contact us.

Inspired by the well-known Mimbo theme by Darren Hoyt, OpenBook is a free Magazine style Wordpress theme, which doesn’t require you to manually edit a file.

I first realeased this theme in January, but at this time it was only available in French. So it is the very first English version.

OpenBook Wordpress magazine theme

Download OpenBook

Download OpenBook 2.2 Wordpress Theme: zip archive

If you’re looking for a live demo, check out my personnal blog which uses this theme.

OpenBook Features

Here’s what you can expect in OpenBook theme:

  • Magazine-style homepage, including 2 columns and SmoothGallery for your featured posts.
  • 100% Gravatar compatible.
  • Custom fields to insert images on the homepage gallery, on homepage posts and in categories posts.
  • Magazine-style dropdown-menu for your categories.
  • Not manual editing required. After installing the theme, you’ll find an OpenBook tab under Design, where you can set up the options for the theme, including featured posts, featured category, blog logo, number of posts to display on the gallery, categories to display on the blog homepage…
  • If you hate Internet Explorer 6 as I do, you’ll probably be happy: OpenBook have an option which litteraly crash IE6 if checked. If unchecked, IE6 will not crash and people who (still) use it will see your blog just as other users.
  • Compatible with Firefox 2, Firefox 3 beta, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 6. (OpenBook is also probably compatible with other browsers like Konqueror, I just haven’t tested it myself)
  • Widget-ready sidebar
  • SEO-friendly titles
  • Page templates for Links and Archives
  • Compatible with Wordpress 2.3 to 2.5.1

Installing OpenBook

OpenBook install is like installing any Wordpress theme: Unzip the archive, and upload the openbook22-en directory into the wp-content/themes of your Wordpress install.

Then, go to your WP administration panel, Design » Theme and select OpenBook.

OpenBook Wordpress magazine theme

Now, you should go to Design » OpenBook and fill the various fields:

  • Your blog logo url
  • ID of your featured category
  • Number of posts to display in SmoothGallery.
  • IDs of categories to display on the homepage.
  • If you want to make any IE6 crash, just check the related checkbox. :D
  • Number of posts to display on the homepage, by category

Configuring SmoothGallery

SmoothGallery is a very pretty mootools script by Jonathan Schemoul which display posts along with big images. In order to configure it, you must create a new category (In this exemple, we’ll call it featured) and report its ID to Design » OpenBook.

When you want to show a particular post in the SmoothGallery, just edit the post and check the featured category. Of course, you can add the post to other categories as well.

Now, you should define an image that will display in SmoothGallery. Juste create a custom field, give it featuredimg as key and your image url as value. Once saved, the post will be displayed in SmoothGallery.

The ideal SmoothGallery image size is 600*250 pixels. You can use different size, but the image will be cropped or will not fill all the available space.

Using custom fields to display images in posts

As I said above, it is possible to assign one or more image(s) to a post. Theses images will be displayed on the homepage, or in categories pages, depending of the custom field used.

Here’s the custom fields keys, and the place where the images will be displayed.

  • featuredimg » The image will be displayed in SmoothGallery (Only if the related post is in the featured category)
  • Image » The image will be displayed along with its related post, on the homepage.
  • catimage » The image will be displayed in category pages. Ideal size is 125*125 pixels.

Please note

The OpenBook theme is (and will stay) 100% free. I also try to always help people who use it as much as I can. The only thing that I’m asking, is that you leave my link on the theme footer. Thanks in advance ;)

Edit on July 3, 2008: I just wrote a simple tutorial for modifying OpenBook color scheme. You can read it here.
