I’ve been hunting for an ecommerce plugin for Wordpress at the request of a client, and so far it appears that the WP e-Commerce plugin by Instinct Entertainment is the only horse in town. I’m bookmarking to give it a good test later. There appears to be a “free” and “commercial” version. I listed the “recently added features” (as of WP e-Commerce 3.5.1) below. The paid version is WP e-Commerce Gold which is a reasonably priced $15 for “a single Blogger”. However, i’m not sure what the $250 “Gold Upgrade - For Business” is exactly for outside of “Businesses setting up WP e-Commerce sites for their clients”. For $250, it better be an unlimited (or close to it) license.

Having followed the progress of a fair few WP sites, some thoughts on the subject of SEO for WordPress.

It shouldn’t really be simpler - at the time of writing, for the ’standard blog’ - whatever that might mean - the default WordPress install works just fine. This could change, either on the WordPress side, or by any popular search engine radically changing the way they do things, but not so likely…

You can get into more of a mess by messing with the default, than leaving well alone.

However, there can be exceptions. If you have a lot of archive urls (monthly or category) without many posts in them, a certain large search engine will occasionally index the archive urls and ignore the individual post urls. This is rare, but to get round this, look no further than the WordPress duplicate content cure plugin - it’s been around for a while and does exactly what it claims.

The other cure is the use of the ‘more’ tag to create post excerpts. Here, this will have the effect of breaking up the duplication of content on the archive versus individual post urls - including the index page - exactly what it’s designed for…

Otherwise, all the standard principles apply:-

Use accurate keywords in the post title - don’t be seduced by long-tail keyword theory and start trying to do all this in the title - more likely, it will happen of itself.

Give images their alt tags, especially if they’re linking somewhere.

Think about anchor text in your internal linking, ie from one post to another - can never do any harm to highlight a relevant keyphrase.

There’s other principles involved - consult any reputable SEO guide, not just those focused on WordPress - but, seriously, people often waste too much time trying to make things beyond perfect….

The Business Directory plugin for Wordpress is an easy way to host a free directory page for your readers, affiliates, advertisers, community or club members. Invite them to submit a simple advertisement listing for themselves on your blog.

Listings include company name, a short description, and contact information including a live URL. The plugin includes an admin tab that allows you to approve of listings before they appear live on the site. You can also edit and delete listings.

We will soon have a premium version of this plugin that allows you to promote a listing upgrade to your directory participants; you set the cost and collect via PayPal, they get to upload a logo and appear in the top ‘premium’ section of your Directory.

Business Directory is a great way to increase the SEO value of your site, and to monetize your community participation.

Plugin Summary
Every time you make a post on your blog it grabs similar posts from other blogs that allow pingbacks using the post tags. It then links to them at the bottom of the post as similar posts. It then executes the pingback on all the posts. You can specify how many posts to do per tag and that many will be done for each tag you use in your posts. Typically it has about an 80% successrate with each pingback and they are legit so the ones that fall into moderation tend to get approved. This creates quite a few deep links for each blog post you make and through time really helps with your link building. Especially for new blogs.

Theory Of Operation

* The plugin will listen to anytime a post is saved, published, updated, etc.
* The plugin on execution time will find all the tags on the post and perform the following per tag:
o Use Google API to check for ( 35 ) results with the tag name.
o With the ( 35 ) results it loops through them and performs the following
+ Does the result have a pingback meta tag?
+ Does the result have trackback somewhere in the source
+ (if yes to both) it stores the pingback xmlrpc location in memory.
+ (if no to either) we skip that record and move to the next.
+ Once their are 5 legit pingable servers we then append their links to the post we currently added.
+ We then retrieve the xmlrpc urls from memory, and execute a pingback.ping against the xmlrpc as defined in the pingback 1.0 spec. (due to the nature of pingbacks and php it is not a 100% guarantee. A lot of dependencies on state, server responses, headers, etc.)

Their are built in features such as caching google’s recordsets per tag, so you don’t have to make request out to google for the same use. And logic to know if you’ve already “PingCrawled” a post then on edit to ignore it, etc w/ a built in polling system.
Installation:

1. Download Plugin
2. Put file in the wp-content/plugins directory of your wordpress installation
3. Login to your blog dashboard
4. Click on Plugins
5. Click on Active to the Right of PingCrawl in the list
6. Make a Post

*Note ( because of the nature of the script any one tag can make as many as 41 HTTP request and storing source code into memory to run regular expressions against. Because of this I would try to limit my tags to no more than 3 (123 HTTP Request). Use more at your own risk.

Warning: This plugin can really slow down the time it takes to make your posts so I would recommend not using more than 3 tags per post. Also we coded in a small link injection which will put a link of mine into the mix about once every 10 posts. They will all be very white hat and clean links so no worries and if you left the code intact I’d consider that a substantial thank you for the plugin.

The highly anticipated new version of the popular open source WordPress blogging platform/CMS is continuing to inch closer to its release, and it appears that many new features and changes have already been thrown in.

Ryan Boren, a prominent developer for WordPress, recently released a list of the features that have been added so far, including things as advanced as an SSH2 filesystem supporting SFTP and inline post editing on the content index pages, as well as some simpler features like sticky posts and keyboard shortcuts.

Earlier this month, Automattic opened up a survey (closed on the 18th) for users to share their comments, questions, ideas and suggestions for a new administration panel in 2.7, and it’s evident that the interface is being changed. The new UI includes a different style of navigation (sidebar) and a new menu heirarchy. The survey played a key role in the development of the new backend.

While Boren points out that not all of the listed features are ready for prime time, he says that they should all be included in the release, along with a few other goodies such as theme browsing, installation and updating.

The WordPress roadmap has 2.7 at about a quarter of completion, and there is not yet a stated estimate for the official release of the update.
